WRITING WEEK 9

WRITING WEEK 9

I have good news and great news.

GOOD NEWS

Many of you did an amazing job on the income and wealth activity. Really well done.

You found the main idea: the higher the income, the longer the life span.

You also described some possible cause and effect links that could explain why/how income is correlated with life span.

Some examples include:
  • better health care (e.g. hospitals, doctors, medicine, health insurance)
  • education
  • diet
  • less stress

GREAT NEWS

Let's do more.

Poetry Corner

Who wrote this?

Which movie about an English teacher made the poem famous?

That you are here—that life exists and identity,
That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.

WRITING WEEK 8

WRITING WEEK 8

This week we begin a new chapter in the writing class.
We move into the world of arguments.

Zoom meeting

(This Zoom message is repeated on the Listening Lesson plan)

Got a question?

I'll be sitting in the Zoom room watching the digital tide roll away. Come by your Listening Period on Wednesday.

You know books?

Which famous writer began a novel with these lines?

Maman died today.
Or yesterday maybe, I don't know.

The answer (and a free ebook).

Part 1 Correlations

What is a correlation? Get the answer to that question in this mini-lesson.

Part 2 Cause and Effect

Correlation is not causation. That is your mantra. Learn the difference in this mini-lesson.

Part 3 Writing Activity

A fine example of scaffolding, this writing assignment builds on the knowledge and skills you gathered in parts 1 and 2.

There is only one writing assignment this week.

Can you guess why?

Read the instructions below and the answer will be clear.

Please give your best effort on the first draft. After feedback, I will ask you to write a second draft.

That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

It's easy to run in any classroom.

Part 3 This week 2a

Let's do another TOEFL listening chapter.

Here is my suggestion: let's do half the chapter this week.

Is that a good idea or a great idea?

The blackbird whistling
Or just after.
